28th-Apr-2009 12:00 pm - All-Original Costume Contest
TomCroom

All-Original Costume Contest

Time: Sunday, 2PM
Location: Main Events (Paradise Ballroom)

Registration and Line-Up For Contestants
Time: Sunday, 3PM
Location: Main Events (Paradise Ballroom)

Here’s something new for our cosplayers in our final year! This contest is built completely around the creative minds of those who dare to design their own fashion creations! For years now, we often received the question, “Can we enter original costumes in the cosplay?” With such apparent interest, we decided to give a nod to these creative individuals!

All-Original Costume Contest Rules

  1. All entries must be registered JACON X (2009) attendees. Badges/wristbands must be worn to the registration and contest.
  2. The costume that is entered must be designed by you…not a work of another person, or an already existing outfit/costume. While the design must be “original”, it can be inspired by something already existing. Just alter it enough to be able to claim some form of originality.
  3. You may wear the costume yourself, or have a model wear it. If you do use a model, however, please remind him/her that all awards go to the designer of the costumes, and that wearing the costume does not mean they’ll earn an award.
  4. Since this contest is in the spirit of fun, and is more about the creative process and not the skills involved in costume making, we will allow costumes constructed with help from others (commissions or otherwise). However, you will get bonus points if you both design AND construct the costume yourself. Entrants must list all parties involved in the making of the costume entered.
  5. You may enter a group, but make sure each costume in the group has a separate entry form. We’ll attach them together so you can all go back to back, and stand on stage together.
  6. Each entrant will have 1 minute on stage to show off her/his costume. You can do a small skit, speech, whatever. If you want to use music, it must be pre-mixed and cued on a burned CD. If you don’t want to do anything specific, that’s fine, too. Just make sure you pose nicely for 30 seconds or so at the cue point for the audience to see your costume and so everyone can get some nice photos.
  7. You may use existing anime characters as the models for your original outfit. So, you can design a completely new outfit FOR Chii, and dress up as Chii wearing this outfit for the contest...but you can't make one of her already existing artbook outfits to enter. Got it?
  8. Keep it PG-13, please. No nudity, risqué costume or lewd gestures will be allowed. This is a family show
  9. Entries must follow JACON’s official weapons policy. In addition, all props must be safe for yourself and those around you. That means no sharp edges, harmful materials, or anything of the like. Also, you must be able to maneuver your prop and/or costume through a crowd without disturbing those around you. Exceptions can be made for on stage ONLY, and must be approved by the Event Director beforehand. Any questions concerning the Weapons Policy can be directed at specialevents@jacon.org It’s better to ask ahead and make sure than arrive at the con and have to leave your gorgeous prop in the car all weekend.
  10. No harmful or potentially harmful substances will be allowed. This can include, but is not limited, to: water, silly string, flames, fireworks, cigarettes, and any other substance that can be fired, launched, or dripped. Everything that comes on stage with you should leave with you, capche?
  11. Bad behavior, trash talking and poor sportsmanship will be frowned upon. Unruly behavior will get you kicked out of the event, if not the convention. So mind your manners and don’t be rude.
  12. Make sure you having the following with you when you show up for contest registration.
    • The official All-Original Costume Contest Registration Form
    • Your JACON X badge. This will be checked and confirmed.
    • Design sketches/drawings of your concept
    • In-progress photos of you making your costume are optional, but would be a good idea.
    • Yourself (or your model) in the costume you’re entering.
  1. Rules may be added or changed as needed by the Event Director. Please check back often for updates.

Time: Saturday during the Costume Competition
Location: Main Events (Paradise Ballroom)

Our unique photo shoot contest has returned for its 5th year! This event is designed to celebrate all the fun of taking photos of your costumes, while honoring the best of these beautiful images…

Here’s the basic idea- you and your friends will go and have a photo shoot. Take as many photos as you like, and send your best 12 to us. Our judges will look them over, compare them to other entries, and pick the award winners. Then, a selection of everyone’s photos will be assembled for a slideshow and awards ceremony during JACON X!

For our final year, we’ve created new, more simplified rules, designed to make the event more relaxed and fun! Please read the rules carefully, get your costumes ready, and snap away!

19th-Mar-2009 07:34 am - The Macross Social
TomCroom

Time: Thursday, 8 PM- Midnight
Location: Paradise IV (Small Events)

A special Thursday night event!

Join us as we celebrate the wonderful anime legacy of Macross! Known to many U.S. fans as Robotech in the early years, Macross has continued to grow in popularity across the globe! The latest installment of the saga, Macross Frontier, has a huge following. We’ve decided that now, in our final year, it would be appropriate to honor one of the greatest anime series of all time!

The evening will be divided into several parts:

  • In our first hour, we’ll play some AMVs and clips of the various Macross series while everyone chats and mingles. We’ll also have some food and drinks available for the attendees.
  • At 9 PM, we’ll begin a special costume event- the Miss Macross Contest! If you’re interested in participating, please see the instructions below. Pilots, there’s a mission for you during this event, as well.
  • As soon as the Miss Macross Contest ends, we’ll bring out dessert and start some games and trivia challenges! We’ll have prizes for those who can really prove that their Macross knowledge is superior!
  • Finally, we’ll end the evening with a special screening of the newest Macross…Frontier!

18th-Mar-2009 08:56 am - The Royal Flush Casino
TomCroom

The Royal Flush Casino

Location: Paradise IV (Small Events)
Time: Saturday, 9 PM

Do you feel lucky? If so, then let the good times roll…along with the dice! Open during the masquerade, this event is designed to give our con goers a mellow, stylish atmosphere to relax in. There should be snacks, as well as a cash bar. You can slow dance to classic Vegas tunes, try your hand at some casino games, or just talk with friends.

club This event is open to all JACON X (2009) members. Please bring your badge, and if you plan on drinking, your ID. Even though this event is open to all members, it is, in fact, a mature event. Any rowdy or disruptive behavior will be frowned upon, and might get you kicked out of the event, if not the con.

heart Dress up if you like, or just come straight from the masquerade in your formal wear! It isn't required, but nice wear is strongly encouraged.

spade Gambling for money is illegal in the state of Florida (with few exceptions), so this event is purely for entertainment purposes. You do NOT get to keep what you win, or whatever you have left. Think of it as an arcade. Each attendee will be given a set amount to play with when they arrive at the event- all left over chips should be returned to us.

diamond Expect to see what we've had in previous years- Blackjack, Texas Hold'Em, and Bingo. We hope to add Roulette, and maybe some slot machines- this will be a fully operational casino experience not to be missed! Just make sure to remember that it's all in fun, and treat our volunteer dealers and other attendees with respect, and most of all, have a great time!

16th-Mar-2009 04:10 pm - Yaoi Pj Party Info
TomCroom

The Yaoi PJ Party

Time: Friday Night, 9 PM- 3 AM
Location: Paradise IV (Special Events)

Are you ready for the Endgame? This is it! Our 6th and final year of the wildly popular JACON Yaoi PJ Party! Break out the confetti and get ready to celebrate! We have to go out in style, so we're going to bring back some classic moments, while whipping out some new surprises! Don't miss this last chance to party with our pretty boys while in PJs!

Here's a sample of what we've got planned:

An Endgame celebration, including special performances and all sorts of surprises!

  • In honor of the years before, we're going to show the yaoi favorites we all love, old AND new! It will be a great collection of shows and AMVs...only the best of the best!
  • Our famous pajama-themed Costume Contest returns! Come dressed as your favorite character in PJs, and you may win a prize. This is an informal contest, so there are no strict rules (except that you must be decent, if you catch my drift).
  • The ever-popular raffles and give-aways, featuring some impressive yaoi merchandise! Everything from DVDs and manga, to doujinshi and merchandise! You won't want to miss your chance to win something really cool! Past sponsors for these raffles have included DMP/June, Go! Comi, Be Beautiful/CPM, and Yaoi-Con! The publishers really get into this (they even send us future releases), so don't miss it!
  • T-shirts designed specifically for the event, always a hit with our partygoers! Make sure you visit the super talented Kitsune in the Artist Alley. She's given us YEARS of wonderful art for the party, so pick up some of her art to decorate your walls with!
  • We'll make sure that we have our usual tasty spread- popcorn, sodas, candy, and more- you'll have to go dance at the Masquerade to work it all off!
  • Our always rowdy game section, including party games such as Win, Lose or Draw...yaoi-style!
  • And finally, expect all the unexpected, wacky fun that always seems to pop up at PJ parties!
